Positive Psychology in the family

We would like to familiarise the participants of the 1,5- hour- long workshop with the toolkit we use during our 2-day-long workshops designed especially for parents. The exercises and material we use are based on the latest findings of positive psychology and we have been improving this toolkit in partnership with SkillToGo Ltd in order to provide parents with alternative interpretations of challenging situations in general and in connection with child rearing. Our strengths as parents, our children’s strengths, active listening, how to analyse/interpret an obstacle/difficult situation in life, the feedback we give to our children as parents : these are some of the main ideas of our parental training. In some cases we could do a follow-up after our courses and and we could find evidence that shows the parents who consciously use the “tricks” and “tips” of the course can really create a happier and more flourishing family life.

Experience mapping – discovering the power of places in the promotion of well-being

We actively use certain places to regulate our emotions and we try to achieve the best possible level of our well-being through visiting or shaping significant places. Emotional experiences are place bound and this feature can be used to discover and understand the complexity of a person’s significant experiences at the workplace.
In the workshop we present a new assessment and intervention technique, the Experience Map based Interview (ExperiMAP). The ExperiMAP Interview combines the resource centeredness of positive psychology with the holistic approach of environmental psychology and systemic therapy. The procedure is designed to support workplace health promotion: it can be used to understand a person’s emotions, emotion laden behaviour and relational processes at the workplace.
Through ExperiMAP based assessment we can evoke emotionally significant experiences related to one’s workplace and thus we can get insight into the factors that may influence well-being and well-doing in work. Consequently, the recalled experiences can be used to build strengths as well as to modify behavioral and relational patterns. When applied in an organizational context, the method provides useful information for promoting employee well being.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to make self-experience with the technique, as well as learn case study examples and practical information on the assessment and intervention with ExperiMAP Interview based procedures.

There is always a way out (Educational methods of working with children living in extreme poverty)

The integration of highly disadvantaged children can never fully take place solely within school walls. Their education should be a focused program that is able to deal with this complex problem these children are facing. The current educational system, with its highly centralized vision and the legalisation of segregated schools, lacks experts that are able to help. We need to work outside of the schools, as well, since the families and communities play just as large of a role in eliminating poverty. Although we are working for future generations we realize that this also means supporting the parents and families of our children. Within this work you need a positive mindset and a methodology, in which you can address every aspect of developing social competencies.

Nowadays the stress indicators of both adults and children are quite high and the tendency is getting worse. Stress management in our overwhelmed everyday life is an essential skill, which is very useful to acquire as soon as possible. Learning the basics of stress management in childhood gives the possibility to benefit from it throughout the whole life. This is why we have developed our Calmschool project. The mission of this project is that every stakeholder in school, teachers, students and parents 1. recognise their own stress symptoms, 2. have a stress management toolkit, and 3. be able to use some of these techniques as a skill. For this purpose we bring interactive stress management sessions to schools that also interpret and normalize stress in a positive framework. In line with the concept of empowerment, we introduce concrete and evidence-based stress management techniques that are easy to use in everyday life. This presentation will be about this approach, and about some of our specific tools in this work.

Nowdays I make a very exiciting experiment in my work. I’ve used the experiential education for a long time and now I use it together with the solution focus which I’ve started to use for two years.
In the workshop we are going to think, talk and play together about why it is good, useful and entertaining to use these methods together.

Learning, despite all promises, is not all sugar and spice. It needs time and energy, and it produces a change, which means leaving the safe harbours. If there is anything that makes the invested time and energy worthwhile, it is the feeling of success, the sense of getting ahead. How can this feeling be undermined or deliberately created? What is the role of students and educators in all this?

Ágnes Enyedi

Broaden and Build in the school is the interactive experience-based presentation of SkillToGo Ltd, Positive Psychology in the classroom and Momentán Társulat (an improvisational theatre company). What happens when the approach based on positive psychology is boosted by improvisation techniques in the classroom? Joy and creativity take over. Eyes sparkle. Thanks to improvisation presence and connection prevail. This is how we enter the learning zone. And this is how Barbara Fredrickson’s theory of broaden and build comes alive. We are looking forward to having all of you around for a mutual game.
